Palace on Wheels is now available for charter. The train of the Maharajas can now be rented wholly, although at Maharaja like prices all the same – INR 1.7-2.5 crores ($310,000-450,000). Trade experts have expressed different opinions on this move by IRCTC – while some have lauded the initiative, others have already dismissed it as a dud. As I started to put my thoughts to paper, I could think of a few scenarios when you just can’t help but board the Palace on Wheels.

The pampering interiors, gastronomic endeavors of the consummate chefs and the gracious hospitality of the staff, all aspects of this Indian luxury train have been bespoke keeping in mind the true essence of royal Rajasthan. All the coaches of this regal train draw inspiration from the erstwhile princely states of Rajasthan and are bejeweled with intriguing Rajasthani art and craft. A few delicate examples of this aforementioned statement are miniature paintings of Jaipur coach and oil paintings depicting the romantic tales of Dhola-Maru in Bikaner coach.
Palace on Wheels also boasts of several recreational spots such as in-house bar and a nonchalant lounge where guests can sit and enjoy the terrific views of Thar Desert over a glass of hearty wine. The guest cabins of this luxury train features traditional décor and modern amenities which creates a flattering juxtaposition of customary and contemporary.
The dining experience on board too scores full marks for its gourmet fare and spectacular ambience. The two ornately designed restaurants namely, Maharaja and Maharani, tastefully serves both Indian and international cuisines along with traditional Rajasthani fare. The in house bar is fully stocked with an eclectic assortment of wines and spirits to keep your spirits high.
